Beauty and Appearance

Microdermabrasion is a non-invasive, skin resurfacing procedure that gently exfoliates or polishes away the top layer of dead skin cells manually to reveal skin that looks and feels brighter and smoother. Fine lines, blemishes, dull skin and sun spots can be improved, especially with regular treatments.  Skin care products are more easily absorbed and therefore more effective after a microdermabrasion treatment. This is a safe and painless skin treatment performed by a skin care professional.

When to consider microdermabrasion

  • If you want to brighten your skin and reveal a healthy glow

  • If you have sun damage, acne scars, or fine lines

  • If your skin texture feels rough to the touch

  • If you can’t do other light exfoliation, such as chemical peels

It may require a series of microdermabrasion treatments and then ongoing maintenance treatments to reach a desired goal. There is an immediate result of smoother skin after a treatment and while there are no serious side effects, the skin may feel sensitive and appear slightly red following a treatment.  Any sensitivity or redness is typically gone within 48 hours.

Chemical free sunscreen should be worn after a treatment and is especially important on the days to follow.

Makeup may be applied right away and all normal activities may be resumed.

Though Microdermabrasion is considered safe for many skin types, it is not an appropriate treatment for active acne, extremely sensitive skin, active Rosacea, eczema or dermatitis.

Professional microdermabrasion is much more powerful and effective than any of the home units that may be purchased by the consumer.

Types of Microdermabrasion

The first is the Crystal Microdermabrasion type of microdermabrasion performed by professionals which includes a hand piece that emits crystals onto the surface of the skin, resulting in a gentle abrasion or “polishing” process. The dead skin cells along with the crystals are then suctioned off either instantaneously (in the same hand piece) or in a secondary process.

The second type is a Diamond Tip Microdermabrasion that utilizes a diamond-tip hand piece that gently abrades and exfoliates dead skin cells. Like the crystal microdermabrasion, the dead skin is either suctioned off right away in the same hand piece or in a secondary process. The diamond-tip microdermabrasion is safer to perform closer to the eyes and has more flexibility in sensitive areas or on more sensitive skin.
