Fractional Lasers – Fraxel, CO2

Two types of fractional lasers are now in use:

  • Erbium-type fractional lasers, like the Fraxel (often called “non-ablative” by physicians)

  • CO2 (carbon dioxide) laser systems

In general, the Fraxel and similar lasers, such as the Fraxel Dual, are recommended for younger patients (under 50), those with mild to moderate acne scarring, and those who have fine lines and wrinkles.

The CO2 systems are recommended for patients with more serious damage, such as pronounced lines and wrinkles, acne and other scarring, as well as tightening skin laxity.

The fractionated CO2 lasers can treat more deeply, but they also require more downtime than the Fraxel.  CO2 lasers create more heat in the skin during treatment. The light and heat help tighten the skin by producing millions of small laser wounds. As the skin heals, it tightens and texture improves. Thus Fraxel Laser or C02 Laser has caused a wound in the skin, and such procedures will benefit from good wound care practice.

Preparation for Laser Treatments

If you and your medical or skin care professional determine that a laser treatment is right for you, it is very important to prepare the skin in advance of the laser for the best possible outcome.  Begin to prepare the skin one month in advance of the scheduled laser treatment.

Pre-laser protocol; twice daily

  1. Gently cleanse the skin with the NeoGenesis Cleanser

  2. Apply 4 to 6 drops of NeoGenesis Recovery serum to the face and neck, including the eye area

  3. Apply NeoGenesis Intensive Moisturizer or Barrier Renewal Cream

  4. Always wear a chemical free sunscreen during the day

Your skin will need two weeks to heal following a laser treatment.  During this time, handle the skin gently with the following home plan.

Post-laser protocol; twice daily

  1. Gently cleanse the skin with the NeoGenesis Cleanser

  2. Mist with the NeoGenesis Moisturizing Mist

  3. Apply 4 to 6 drops of NeoGenesis Recovery serum to the face and neck, including the eye area

  4. May apply NeoGenesis Booster or Skin Serum here if skin is particularly dry

  5. Apply NeoGenesis Intensive Moisturizer or Barrier Renewal Cream

  6. Always wear a chemical free sunscreen during the day

  7. Spritz Moisturizing Mist throughout the day, as needed for soothing relief

After the 14-day healing phase has passed, you may continue with this protocol or go to a maintenance program of Recovery once per day or 3 to 4 times per week. Booster or Skin Serum may be used with Recovery, or alternate daily use, followed by Light Moisturizer, Intensive Moisturizer or Barrier Renewal Cream, twice daily.
